Sarper Erel

P8 is a small radio that sits in your Mac’s menu bar. It plays eight public and independent stations from around the world: click the icon, press a number, and you’re listening. There are no feeds or algorithms, and nothing to scroll through. Just eight stations, picked by Sarp.

Its purpose

To bring back the feeling of turning on the radio. Someone else does the choosing, and you let it play. Public radio is one of the last places where real people pick music for other people, without trying to keep you hooked. P8 just makes it easier to reach, sitting right there next to your clock.

Why it gives or spreads joy

Because it asks nothing of you. You don’t have to optimise anything or decide what comes next. You just hear a song you didn’t know you’d like, chosen by a DJ in Copenhagen or Sydney. It’s for people who’d rather slow down than hustle, and for anyone who misses being surprised.

It curates things you find on instagram (hey this is where we all find things these days) let's you save it and it curates them itself. In some ways better version of Google map's personal elephant brain.

Its purpose

I want to see if a save app could be made the European way: your list stays yours, there’s no tracking and no feed.

One day I’d like it to pay for itself, but fairly.

Why it gives or spreads joy

It gives me room to make odd things. There’s an elephant who cheers when you save a place, and I’d love to 3D-print him or turn him into stickers. Mostly, it’s something my friends and I actually use.
